Festive music is playing everywhere you go, the weather is cold and crisp, and the exciting anticipation of Christmas is finally setting in. I don’t know about you, but this is my most favourite time of year! Not only do we get to wear comfy jumpers and drink hot chocolate, but we also get the opportunity to create a winter wonderland in our own homes. My kind of season! Whether you’re renting a whole flat or just a room, there are lots of ways that you can make your space look and feel amazing for the festive period.

From ramping up the hygge factor to getting crafty with nature, making your space look great on a budget for the holidays has never been easier. In fact, with a little ingenuity and perhaps a quick raid of the local park, you might be able to decorate without spending anything at all!
It’s all in the palette
You all know how much I love colour palettes, and Christmas is no exception! Choosing a theme to work with is essential for pulling your space together. If you are working on a budget, then keeping it as simple as possible is the best way to keep costs down. Classic reds and greens are great for creating a Christmas vibe, as are whites and golds. Whites are especially great as you can create your own snowflake decorations from plain A4 paper and they will look perfect in your theme.
Think outside of the tree
If you don’t have enough space or money for a tree, don’t worry! There are so many other ways you can bring the festive feeling into your space. Create a Christmas tree from a stack of books or decorate a fallen branch from the park. You could also create a photo tree from all of your favourite Instagram photos or simply make one out of cardboard that you have lying around.
Be guest-ready
Decorating your space for the holidays isn’t just about making it look pretty – it’s also to make it super welcoming for festive visitors! There are a few ways that you can make your space warm and inviting without breaking the bank. Light some pine or cinnamon scented candles to create a feeling of Christmas hygge, bring out extra blankets to make your space feel cosy.
Make your own decorations
There is nothing more satisfying than making your space look incredible and knowing that you made most of it yourself. Here are a few ideas on how you can create your own beautiful and stylish decorations for Christmas without having to spend a small fortune.
- Cork reindeer
This is one of the easiest and cutest decorations around! All you need are two corks, some twigs and a touch of glue. Attach 4 twigs to one cork to act as the legs and a further twig for the neck. Attach the other cork to the end of the neck to make the head. Then, add two more twigs to the head for antlers and hey! You have yourself a seriously cute reindeer!
- Fir cone baubles
If you found yourself hoarding fire cones during the autumn, now is a great time to turn them into decorations. Paint the tips of the cone to fit your Christmas palette, tie a string to the end and hang them from your tree, or hang several together as a garland for your room.
- Make your own wreath
Nothing says Christmas more than a beautiful wreath, so head to your local park and forage for a few items to help you create your own. Make it as simple or elaborate as you like, just don’t forget to keep it light so that it hangs nicely on your door!
However you choose to decorate your space this year, just remember that you don’t have to spend lots of money to create the wow factor. In fact, you can do it without spending anything at all! Happy holidays!
