Last weekend, I decided to climb the second highest mountain in Wales Pen Y Fan at 886 metres above sea-level. It is located at the Brecon Beacons National Park. Breathtaking views and nature around, this national park has loads of to offer. It took around 2h altogether, through warm sun lights but also freezing winds once we climbed to the very top. The climb wasn’t very steep only in small parts, but perfectly suitable for children too of course with the assistance of an adult.

Wales stole my heart quite a while ago when I explored my first smaller mountain Farteg located in Welsh small town, Ystragalnais. I have always loved climbing and since my childhood explores, I learned the struggle but as well the reward of breathtaking views. One thing, I have to admit I haven’t done this time is taking into consideration of my climbing outfit. It was a very last decision to take the mountains to walk and as dressed as I was, we arrived at the bottom of Pen Y Fan only for me to realise that jeans and jumper, wasn’t the best idea at all. I was lucky my boyfriend had spare hoodie and hat in his truck, so it got little comfier.

 

Today, I wanted to give you a little guide to what to wear when you decide to climb Welsh mountains especially, that the weather changes within seconds from nice warm spells to freezing cold winds.

Shoes. One of the most important parts of your climbing outfit. ‘Give the girl the right shoes’ remember the quote? It wouldn’t be more perfect in this instance. While my shoes were warm, I have to admit they were very slippery on wet surfaces like stones and mountains have a tendency to change from wet to dry within metres of walking. The thing of proper hiking boots or trainers with a solid sole.

Hoodie and jacket. Make sure instead of wool( especially wool) that if you must wear it, is under something waterproof. In high Mountains, the wind can be moist and your wool will soak it up quickly. Warm breathable swat top with hood and waterproof jacket is a must.

Trousers. Your treatable gym leggings would be perfect, but also try comfy jogger set, which will be stylish and comfy. Jeans can be great, but make sure they fit well, and can stretchy and ditch high wasted or ripped stylish jeans and leave them to city breaks as the windy condition will make your knees freeze.

Hats and gloves. Yes, Make sure you have some comfy earmuffs or hat in the pocket. When it gets very windy, your perfect blow dry will go down the drain and makeup will smudge all over your face, so make sure you have a warm hat on as well as gloves in your pocket.

T-shirt and socks. Warm breathable socks is a must as well as cotton t-shirt underneath. As much as it gets cold up there, once you walking down, it can get very warm and you will end up taking off layers, so make sure you have light and easy to carry outfit that can be quickly put on as soon as the wind is back.
