Winter in the UK is a dark and dreary time, which is why it’s important for homeowners to look for ways to brighten up the interior of their properties and keep spirits high. Whether you live in a small studio apartment or a large cosy farmhouse in the countryside, there are various ways to add elements of colour throughout your home to ensure it remains a cheerful environment, even in the height of winter. Of course, there’s no right or wrong answer when it comes to interior design, as it’s down to personal taste; some people like to go bold with a big feature wall, while others prefer simple soft furnishings to brighten the place up.

Perhaps you could consider adding some framed artwork around your home. This doesn’t have to be expensive; lots of high street stores sell affordable canvases and paintings that you can hang in various locations throughout your property. You can then draw out the colours by adding matching cushions on your sofas, or a matching rug. Be sure to choose something that suits the rest of your interior as a funky, modern painting might not look great in a traditional property, and vice versa. Some people do, however, like to create contrasts, but it would be wise not to get too carried away.

Another way to make a statement in your home is to install a stained glass window. Lots of people tend to associate stained glass with religious buildings, but it’s fairly easy to have them installed within family homes. They are fantastic for adding curb appeal and, if you get involved in the design, you can really incorporate your personality into the property. Another benefit of stained glass is that it increases your privacy. For instance, if you currently have a glass panel in your front door, you could replace it with stained glass so that nosy neighbours can’t peer in as they’re walking past.

Another thing is to consider your kitchen, as the colour of your work surfaces and cupboard doors can change the overall atmosphere in the room. If they’re dark, it might make the room feel more enclosed, whereas brighter colours will reflect the light around the room. There are plenty of companies that offer a range of fitted kitchen options who you could get in touch with to discuss your requirements. Even just installing a vibrant splash back with a matching blind will add an element of colour that you might currently be missing.
