When you rent your house or flat, there is always that underlying feeling that it doesn’t actually belong to you. This can be a tough feeling to experience seeing as this is your home now. So, instead of constantly feeling like this, it’s important for you to make your rental feel like it’s your home. In this article, we’re going to be taking a look at some of the things that you can do to make your rental feel like home, so keep reading down below if you would like to find out more.
Decorate Your Own Way
The first thing that you should do is make sure that you are decorating your own way. Don’t worry about the way that the home was decorated when you got there, you just need to be aware that they can ask you to put it back before you move out. However, this should only be a big deal to you if you are only planning on living here in the short-term. If you are in this for the long haul then you need to be able to decorate things your own way.

Think of the kind of designs that you like and then try to work with this. Try to create something that you adore whether this is the cluttered look, or whether it’s more of a minimalist design. Don’t forget that you are the one who has to live here, so as long as you are taking care of the home and not damaging it, that’s all that matters.

Personal Items
Another thing that you should be thinking about is adding personal items to your home. There are a lot of different personal touches that you can choose from, even going for all of them if you like. You can include pictures of your friends and family, candles, custom calendars, throws on the back of the sofas and so much more. Pretty much anything works here, as long as it is personal to you. It might not feel as though your home belongs to you, and if this is true then you just need some more personal items.
When someone walks into your home, they should be able to tell who lives there. They should be able to tell that it’s your home and nobody else’s if they know you because that’s one of the main points of personalising the space. Just make sure that it makes you happy, because at the end of the day this is the main point

Don’t Get It Furnished
When you see houses or flats listed, make sure that you are choosing an unfurnished option. If you choose to get furnishing, this is just going to make it even more difficult to forget that you are living in a property that someone else owns. When you see their furnishings over the space, and you see the furniture that they left behind, it is going to hit you completely differently. While the furniture that they have might be lovely, it’s still a better idea to get your own.
Of course, if you are tight for cash right now and all you can afford is furnished then this is something completely different. If you have no choice then you have to do what you have to do, but if you can afford to move your furniture in instead, this is the better option for you to make it feel like your home.
You can find a lot of good furniture online, and in sales in local stores if you know where to look. One of the best pieces of advice that we have ever received is that you should never buy furniture when it’s full price. It will always come down at some point, and you will likely always be able to find something that you like at a reduced price, so just wait because it saves you a lot of money.

Mirrors
You might not think that it would be true, but you can put mirrors up around your home to make it feel more like home. You will see yourself more and more in the home, which will lead you to start to feel more comfortable here. You can get a range of different shapes and styles of mirror, some full length and some at head height. The more that you see yourself in the house, the more comfortable you are going to become and realise that this is your home no matter what. It might seem as though it’s not going to work, but we guarantee that it will make things easier for you at the very least.
Plants
Another interesting idea is to add plants to the home. Become a plant parent, because it’s such a cool feeling to keep something alive and watch it thrive. For those of you who have children, you know what it’s like, and for a lot of people it’s the same kind of feeling with plants. You can head to your local nursery and find some plants that you like, take them home and nurture them. For some reason, having plants makes the space feel more homey, and you will see this as soon as you get some.
Once you have successfully raised one plant, you can get some more and more until you feel like you have got enough. They also have lots of benefits as they are living organisms such as clearing toxins out of the air, which is a huge bonus.
Curtains And Blinds
We also want to mention that a lot of the time, places that are rented come with standard, ugly blinds. If this is what you have found in your rented property, then you need to cover these up with some curtains that you like. Head to your local furniture store or go online to stores that sell curtains and start looking. Ideally, you’re going to need two different sets, as one is going to be ideal for winter whereas another would be ideal for summer.
For the winter months, you need thicker curtains that are able to keep the heat in, while also blocking out the cold. For the summer months, you can have thinner curtains that let the sunlight in, but also protect you from the full force of the sun and let more breeze through the home.
Creative Storage Solutions
The final thing that we want to say is that you should look into creative storage solutions. You don’t want everything out and all over the place, so your only option is to get creative with what you can do. The best thing that we can think of here is to consider adding furniture to your home that doubles as its original use, and storage. For example, you can get some coffee tables that have a space under the top bit to store things in. This is just one example, there are plenty of them to choose from.
We hope that you have found this article helpful, and now see some of the things that you are going to need to do in order to make your rental feel like home. There are so many different ideas and ways to do this, so it’s simply a case of trying things out and seeing what is going to work out the best for you. We wish you the very best of luck, and hope that you manage to make your rental house feel like a home sooner rather than later.
