How to Prepare Your Child for Their First Overnight School Trip
Sending your little one off on their first ever school sleepover feels like a rite of passage for both child and parent. Your child will likely feel a mix of huge excitement and some anxiety about leaving home behind – even you may feel a tug on the heartstrings!
With some planning and preparation, you can make sure your child feels empowered and ready for the big adventure ahead.
Talking Positively About the Upcoming Trip
Residential school trips for kids will likely happen sometime in Year 6 of primary school. The key is not to make it seem like a massive deal. Keep the chat casual and focus on the fun parts when you discuss the upcoming trip:
- What activities do they most look forward to trying? Rock climbing? Canoeing? A campfire singalong?
- What food do they think will be on the menu? Camping grub like beans on toast, hot chocolate and marshmallows? Yum!
- Who do they hope to share a room with? It’ll be like a giant sleepover with friends!
If they admit to feeling nervous or say they’ll miss home, reassure them that it’s perfectly normal to feel that way.
Preparing Them Emotionally for Being Away from Home
Even if your child doesn’t seem worried, there are things you can do to subtly help prepare them for being away from home:
- Have practice sleepovers at friends or grandparents’ houses to get them used to being in a new environment overnight.
- Look at the trip itinerary together and talk through where they’ll sleep, eat and spend time. Use photos or videos if available.
- Set rules and expectations around behaviour, listening to teachers, and being kind to classmates.
- Teach coping strategies like taking deep breaths, finding a teacher, or squeezing a stress ball if they feel upset or homesick.
- Reassure them teachers will keep them safe and be there for help if needed. It’s a school trip, not a desert island!
Make sure to save time to listen to any worries. Don’t dismiss concerns as silly. Hear them out and problem-solve together. End each trip chat on a positive note about how excited you are for them!
Packing Their Bag and Preparing Essentials
Turn packing their bag into a fun activity by making a list together a few days before the trip. Essential items include:
- Comfortable clothes, pyjamas, underwear and spare socks
- Warm jumper and waterproof jacket
- Wash kit like toothbrush, toothpaste, bath towels
Make sure all clothes and belongings are named to avoid mix ups. Check if the school has policies on sweets, electronics or pocket money. Remember sun cream if needed.
Find out if children need to bring their own sleeping bag and pillow or if bedding is provided. Only pack what’s essential to avoid losing items.
The night before, set out an outfit, shoes, and the packed bag ready for a calm morning. Reassure them you’re just a phone call away if they need you. Remind them you know they’ll have an amazing time!
Then comes the big day! Keep goodbyes brief and upbeat – save any anxious tears for when you’ve waved them off! This overnight adventure is a parenting rite of passage too. You’ll be so proud watching your child spread their wings.
