Moving house is rarely anyone’s idea of a good time, but when you rent, it is an inevitability, so it is worth doing whatever you can to make the transition between homes as easy on yourself as possible. Here are a few thighs that will help with that.
- Start Early (No, Seriously)
If there’s one thing you take away from this, let it be this: don’t leave everything to the last minute. Yes, we know it’s tempting to procrastinate, but nothing ramps up moving stress as a renter like a mad dash to pack up your entire life the night before. Start small and early. Pack up things you don’t use daily – those winter coats, extra bedding, or that random bread maker you swore you’d use. Little by little, you’ll chip away at the mountain, and by the time moving day rolls around, you’ll be cool as a cucumber (well, almost).

- Declutter Like a Pro
Moving is the perfect excuse to declutter. After all, do you really want to lug that old lamp you haven’t switched on in two years to your new place? Didn’t think so. Channel your inner Marie Kondo and ditch anything that doesn’t “spark joy.” Sell it, donate it, or just bin it – whatever it takes to lighten your load. Trust us, future you will thank you when you’re unpacking fewer boxes.
- Rent Storage for the In-Between
If your moving dates don’t quite line up – or if you’ve just realised you’ve got more stuff than your new place can handle – renting a storage unit is a lifesaver. Pop your furniture and excess belongings into storage while you sort yourself out. It takes the pressure off trying to fit everything into your new space immediately, and you won’t have to resort to stacking boxes up to the ceiling in your new living room. It’s also great for those “I’ll deal with it later” items that always seem to appear when you’re packing.
- Label Your Boxes (Unless You Love Playing Guessing Games)
Picture this: you’re standing in a sea of boxes in your new home, desperately trying to find a plate for your first meal (which will probably be takeaway). If you don’t label your boxes, you’ll spend your first week playing “what’s in this one?” Label everything – and we mean everything. Be specific. “Kitchen” won’t cut it – you want “pots and pans” or “cutlery and mugs.” Future-you will thank past-you for this one.

- Pack a First-Night Survival Kit
This one’s essential: pack a “first-night” box with all the things you’ll need immediately upon arrival. Think toiletries, a change of clothes, phone charger, and (most importantly) snacks. You’re not going to want to unpack 20 boxes just to find your toothbrush, and trust us, there’s nothing worse than not knowing where your kettle is when you’re desperate for a cuppa.
- Clean Before You Go (Yes, Really)
It might be the last thing on your mind when you’re trying to move, but make sure you give your old place a good clean before you hand the keys back. Not only will you be more likely to get your deposit back, but it’s also just good karma. Plus, you’ll leave on good terms with your landlord, which never hurts.
Moving between rented homes is never much fun but you can make it easier on yourself!
