Couple months ago, I and my friend decided to book cheap flights and set off for a weekend away in Majorca. We found super cheap flights with dates that suit us and decided to book it. Little we knew then that on the way back the flights will be canceled. I didn’t know then that if this happens, we were entitled to a compensation.

We had an amazing weekend with my friend. We both partied, explored and sunbath while staying at her friend’s house and had a lavish boat trip. Absolutely random and last minute booked a trip but we both really enjoyed it. On the way to the airport we still laughed and checked our photos from the trip and only when we arrived at the airport we learned that our flight back was canceled. Check my Instagram photos.

Both sat in disbelief because what now? We queue for hours to get to help desk, just to be told that all earliest flights been already taken by the passenger before us and they could only accommodate us flights 4 days later or 2 days later arriving in the completely different city with a rather costly trip back to Manchester.
I was in tears, I am not going to lie. Worrying about work and that extra cost. The airlines offered us an accommodation for a further 4 days along with food vouchers. We were taken by bus to our hotel and were offered a taxi back to the airport.

I was worrying so much about work, that I have decided to book myself the easiest available flight which was 2 days later. With my own cost with different airlines.
So how did I got money back?
These days airlines like Ryanair allow for delay compensation as well as canceled compensation under the EU261 law. You can do in various ways. You can go straight with the airline’s website, or to save time you can use 3rd party companies that help you speed up the process.
Few steps to how to get your money back.

- Each airline should have a page where it states about money back. You should search for frame ‘’your airlines’ and EU261 Disruption Compensation and Expense Claim Form
- Make sure you have ALL you expenses receipt, additional flights check-in forms and receipts and info of your flights.
- Some airlines have an exemption of the compensation so you should make sure that your delay or cancellation will be valid by checking these
. Fill the form and attach all your expenses including your flight’s reference number, flight number, time and day of flying along with all your receipts which you can attach as pdf, screenshots or jpg.- It usually takes 45 days so make sure you follow up, as in my case it was rejected at first but after rechecking all documents it was accepted and received my money back.
