Greece is in all of us really. It’s the mother of modern civilization, the giver of democracy, the bestower of philosophy and the lover of ancient tales. It’s also an archipelago with many islands stretching from Europe, Central Asia and into the Middle East. It’s known as the skeletal hand of Europe, stretching far out into a thin yet boney shape. Some of the islands are slightly better than the others. Which is why we thought it would be a good idea to explore each one and then bring you our top 3 choices. We settled at Corfu, Lefkada and Paxos. All three of the islands are pretty much a form of mystical utopia, with lots of different things to do, eat and enjoy.

 

 

Paxos

A powerful name and a powerful island. It’s one of the most eastern islands, which is why it’s been the staging ground for many ancient battles between the Romans and the Greeks. You can just imagine the wooden ships carrying hundreds of fully-clad soldiers onto the white sand beaches, only to be met by arrows and spears from the defending force. The island is 29 square miles, and yet it’s one of the smallest in Greece. You can only reach it via a ferry, which leaves from Igoumenitsa. It’s rocky and boney cliffs are a sight to behold. The blue waters and the lukewarm temperatures make it perfect for a getaway, whether as a couple or even alone. Gaios is the village you want to visit for some excellent seafood and nightlife.

Lefkada

This is one of the most popular rock climbing islands in Greece. It’s craggy and shapely form invites many people from around the world to try and climb it’s famous rock bridge. The cliffs may have a sandy shade to them, but on top, is lush dark green vegetation. The island is home to some of the best kite surfing around, as the winds pick up just off shore and the boats come out to give tourists and locals a ride of their lives. There are also fortress walls around the island, as once again, it too was once the stage of Greek defences. And yes, there are also a lot of white sand beaches here.

Corfu

Without a doubt the best island. We truly saved the best until last because it is a large island with lots to do. It also has the privilege of being one of the best Greek islands for boat rentals. You can rent your own sail or motor boat to cruise around the island at your own leisure and explore some of the in-channels where the ocean has forced its way through the rocky land inward towards the island. The lush vegetation and hot sand is remarkable, especially when you have a lot of privacy as the tall rock of the island provides plenty of shade.
