How often do you put yourself first? The world is unrelenting and, at times, unforgiving and allowing our own personal needs to fall by the wayside can and will lead to heartbreak further down the line.
There are many reasons why people avoid investing in themselves, and typically many feel this is a wasted investment preferring to do what they think they should be rather than what they want to do. And at times, this is essential for different reasons. But not all the time. The thing is, there is no manual for life, and we are all just doing the best we can every day. However, neglecting your needs and pushing yourself with little to no return can lead to burnout along with both mental and physical health implications.
So regardless of what you have going on, you should always find ways to invest in yourself for your future health and happiness and successful adult life.
With this in mind, how can you invest in yourself to start building a better future for yourself?

Improve your personal finances
In the short term, this can mean making some sacrifices to allow you to get your spending and outgoings under control, depending on your starting point. With older millennials and Gen X being the generations who hold the highest level of personal debt on average, avoiding being a statistic such as this can set you up well for your future.
It is never too early to sit down and assess how healthy your finances are. Especially if you have big plans for the future, such as saving for a mortgage, addressing your spending and likelihood of a change in income can help you realise your current ability to get a mortgage or what you need to do to get ready for taking on a mortgage. Maybe you want to retire early, meaning you need to be stricter now to plan for retirement and allow yourself longer to explore the world without needing to work past a certain age. Clearing your debt levels and being strict with staying as debt-free as possible will allow you to better plan and assess your needs for the future. Not to mention allowing to reduce stress levels associated with high levels of bad debts or struggling with out of control finances.

Education
Not everyone is designed to spend years studying at school, nor is everyone afforded the chance to continue education past secondary school level. Being able to invest in yourself by increasing your knowledge and developing your skills by choosing to study later in life is a great way to help you to rewrite your future and open up your options.
JK Rowling wrote Harry Potter when she was 32, and Vera Wang didn’t design her first wedding dress until she was 40. Throw the rule book out of the window and allow yourself the freedom to do what feels right for you at the appropriate age and time of your life. Some people know what they want to do from a young age, and while this is commendable, it doesn’t mean that you can or shouldn’t find your direction at 35, 45 or even 60. So take that evening course, or head back to university and find that spark you have been looking for and use education as a tool to invest in yourself and change your life.

A Healthy Diet and Exercise
This doesn’t mean putting yourself through a restricted and punishing diet to lose weight and suck the joy out of everything. It means addressing what you eat and looking for ways to change your diet to include foods that taste good and nourish your body.
A healthy diet supported by drinking water and regular exercise can be a great way to help you find a zest for life and increase your energy levels and motivation. Getting enough of the vitamins and minerals your body needs on a daily basis can contribute to many vital functions within the body and allow your body to do what it needs to do easier, meaning you benefit from a greater overall level of health.
Exercising improves oxygen circulation in the body. This boost in oxygen helps the mitochondria produce energy and allows your body to perform better and utilise energy more efficiently. Add to this that exercise supports your body in staying strong and supple, improves heart function and releases endorphins that give you that feel-good factor. It is not underestimating things by suggesting that a healthy diet and regular exercise is one of the best days to invest in yourself for now and the future.

Therapy
Therapy is designed to help people overcome a range of difficulties and issues in their lives. Many people dismiss therapy as something weak or unequipped to undertake to help them live their lives. However, there is strength in going to therapy and overcoming your problems by addressing them and putting steps in place to help you overcome them and live your life without being in the shadow of your problems.
Therapy isn’t just talking, but many times that is exactly what is needed. Different therapists have different methods of connecting with their patients and getting them in a place where they feel relaxed and comfortable enough to open up.
The thing is, if you have any baggage, both obvious or not, at some point, this baggage, both metaphorically and physically, will become heavy. Maybe you can feel it slightly tugging on you, or you are aware something is niggling you that you cannot pinpoint. Over time, this will become heavier and heavier until you can no longer breathe under the weight.
A skilled therapist can help you unload that weight and give you the tools to avoid things becoming that heavy again. Remember, therapy is like buying a new coat; you shouldn’t get one because it looks good as ultimately it will be of no use to you when the weather changes. Instead, it would be best if you shopped around to find a coat that not only makes you feel good but can offer you support when you need it.

Assess Your Relationships
As you live your life, it is only natural you change. A person in their 40s can be massively different from who they were in their 20s. This is natural and to be expected. Change and growth is part and parcel of life, and many of us experience this at different times.
Maintaining relationships simply because you have held them for many years when they aren’t healthy can damage you. Engaging in behaviour that was once good but now leaves you feeling bad about yourself or guilty means you have grown. If you have people in your life who are holding you back to stop you from evolving as a person, you need to reassess if you actually want these people in your life from this point on.
There is no shame in accepting you have outgrown a relationship or situation. Addressing it like an adult and being honest with the other person or people can help you to explain what you feel and what is and isn’t working for you. If they respect you and care for you, they should accept your explanation. If not, then maybe it is the right time to cut the apron strings be it friends, family members, partners or colleagues.
Put yourself and your needs first to allow you fully invest in yourself as a person right now and improve what your future looks like it you and means going forward.
