Whether you’re doing up an entire room or just fancy a bit of a change (without spending a fortune), there are a number of ways you can make sure the style of your room is brought together beautifully.

Below, I’ve put together a number of handy tips that I feel work wonders when uniting the interior design of any living space.

 

Put Plenty of Thought into Your Colours

Colours have the ability to unite all of the features of a room or make them look like a completely random assortment. So before you get carried away buying paint, wallpaper and other accessories (I’m guilty of this, too), sit down and think about your colours, going through interior magazines, paint cards and anything else you can get your hands on.

Try to decide on one main colour that will run throughout the scheme before picking up on other subtle colours that will complement each other and enhance the space. For example, the main colour could be within your sofa and curtains, or part of the pattern on your wallpaper.

Choose Your Sofa Wisely

If you’re having a complete overhaul in the room, one of the key pieces of furniture you’ll be adding is a sofa. And as such a dominating piece, it needs to be chosen with style in mind – and not just the design of the sofa.

Consider your overall room and the feel you’re trying to create, and make sure this is emulated in your choice of seating. For example, you might love that shabby chic design with a gorgeous floral pattern, but is that really going to work in a minimalistic room with lots of clean lines?

Alternatively, if you are still in the planning stages of your room, you could design it around your sofa. Making your sofa the standout piece not only creates a stunning focal point but also means you don’t have to go mad on other ‘designer’ pieces. Let your sofa do the talking.

Finally, it’s time to get creative with those all-important finishing touches. And this is where you can have plenty of fun – even if you’re not splurging out on new sofas or decorating. In fact, I sometimes change up my accessories just to give my room a new feel.

Simply choose accessories that fit in with the style of your room and bring out the colours you’ve chosen. From wall art to photo frames and candles, there are so many ways you can bring the room to life.

If you are trying to bring a room together without spending a fortune, just change the main colour of your accessories (this is perfect if you’ve got a neutral colour scheme that’s enhanced by other colours). For example, if you were obsessed with duck egg when it came out a few years ago, switch to on-trend mustards and greys and watch your room transform before your very eyes.

Overall, all it takes is a little bit of creativity and planning and you can create a show-stopping room for next to nothing.
