If you live in rented accommodation, you’ll know how difficult the boundaries surrounding home updates can make any renovation plans. Whilst some landlords are extremely flexible, others are keen for the property to stay exactly as it is, which is when adding your own personal touch or flare to a space can be a testing process.

Whilst it would no doubt be easier to simply take a step back and avoid making any updates, it’s completely understandable that you should feel comfortable within the space you are living, and for some people that means making each space within your home your own. The kitchen in particular is an integral part of everyday life, and therefore is one of the most regularly used spaces. Here are just five ways to make your cooking and eating space that little bit more personal:

Create a display space

It’s wise to invest your money in pieces that not only make a big impact visually but are easily removable when the time comes for you to move on. Open shelving is a hugely popular kitchen trend, as it offers the opportunity to showcase all of the beautiful glassware and statement pieces you have collected over the years. Get creative with window treatments

Curtains and blinds can make or break the styling of a room. Not only do they control the amount of light you allow into the space, they can also add a bold or subtle statement, depending on your preference. If your rental is open plan, consider how the light will affect not only the kitchen, but the living space also. Whilst you may want an abundance of light whilst eating, come evening when you’re settling in for a Netflix binge, a darker atmosphere would be more suitable. Update your hardware

Are you a gold or silver person? We’re all different when it comes to our hardware preferences, but one thing is for sure, rented homes tend to have less than desirable drawer and cupboard handles. Chances are, you’re unable to remove the cabinets completely, but you could well be in with a chance of changing up the hardware – if you ask nicely! Just be sure to keep the old handles in storage, so that you can change them back when you look to move out.

Let your crockery speak for you

White plates are so last season, and statement crockery is definitely having a moment. Whether you prefer a pastel pink set, or a Victorian patterned collection, utilise your mugs, bowls, cups and plates to your advantage. Most rental kitchens are relatively plain, so this is a great way to add some personality to the space, whilst also being able to take all of your collections with you when you eventually decide to move on to a new home.
